Ironman 70.3 Oceanside Swim – Fly – Run!! (1,9k S – 90km R – 21,1km L)

English version below!

Heute ist Race Day!

P.I.Z.Z.A.!!! Yamyam!!

Fazit:
Ein Riesentag!

Today is race day! Alex, a friend of mine who flew in from Germany last Monday, and me signed in for a Half Ironman triathlon. So we have to swim 1,2ml, bike 56ml and run 13,2ml today. My wave heads off at 7:00am. As there are only about 150 athletes in a wave, the quite common brawl after the gun goes off just does not take place. On the other hand, as we head back to the shore, the rising sun we have to look directly look into makes orientation quite difficult! I exit the water after 30:21min which is well within the plan for today. The plan is to swim ~30min, bike ~2:30h and then run ~1:30h. In transition I take off the wetsuit, put on bike shoes and helmet, grab my noble steed and off I go!

I am only on the bike for 10min when I notice the where the timing chip is supposed to be on my ankle, there is nothing. I must have lost it somewhere between the start and mounting the bike. Well, the rule is: “No chip, no time!” so I’ll have to get a new chip somewhere on the course. Where exactly I don’t really know. I think back in transition and push the thought aside for the time being and concentrate on the task on hand: biking hard! I didn’t do much run training leading up to this race but did bike quite a bit and this pays off today! The 25ml mark is reached after 1:01h, wow, that’s fast! But now it’s on to the hilly section of the course and speed drops quite a bit. Regrettably there are not many spectators on the bike course. That’s due to the fact that most of it is on Camp Pendleton, a base of the US-Marines.

From Mile 35 on it really begins to get lonely out here. It seems that there are not many other athletes in front of me than the pros who were sent off 20min earlier than I was.
When I reach Vandergrift Blvd. at the 42ml mark, I expect the infamous head wind to really test my patience but it just is not there! No head wind at all! I seem to be lucky today! The transition from bike to run sees me run in after a ridiculously fast bike split of 2:21:20h and a big smile on my face J even though I don’t really know what the run will be like.

Looking in the right leg of my wetsuit I find my timing chip, which I must have taken off in the process of taking off the wetsuit. Good luck, again!

Now it’s the unknown, the run! Due to an injury I ran a total of roughly 100ml since November and can just hope for this thing to work. The first of the two loops is over after 43:20min but then both my calves begin to lock up! They are just not used to fast running any more! The 5k to the last turnaround are pure suffering and people begin to pass me in significant numbers for the first time. A lot of them may be on their first loop, but nonetheless it’s quite a bit demoralizing to see them flying by. Also my knee starts to hurt again and I really curse a few times. Down at the beach again I do some math and it turns out that if I am able to really push it for the last 1,5ml I can still finish sub 4:30h. So I give it a try, push my heart rate into the 180s for the first time today and when I see Alex approaching on his first loop get another adrenalin rush.

I reach the finish line after exactly 4:29:20h, about 8min faster than the plan! Wow!
Now it’s of the massage tent and grab some salty food. No more power gels and bars today! When I enter the food tent every volunteer stops to work and the all applaud! That’s really amazing and I notice that each finisher is greeted in this very inspiring way!

From now on I only limp along but I don’t care much! After my massage I meet Alex in the transition area who has just finished in just over 5h. An amazing feat if you consider that he only trained for some 5 weeks.

After hugging Alex a few times the fun part of the day starts. Without the pressure of having to immediately leave the race venue after finishing the two of us sit down und have a great time eating pizzas and refuelling on sodas. There are literally thousands of tri bikes and their riders to be looked at and commented on. That’s paradise for some two hours! After that the Californian sky gets cloudy and I find out that awards only go five deep, not ten as I was told so we sadly slowly leave Oceanside.

Final Comments:
Thanks to all volunteers and Tri Club members that did an awesome job cheering us on wherever and whenever they could! Sadly my knee really hurts these days and I’ll have to go find out if there is something seriously wrong with it, which I can only hope not to be the case!

St. Patrick's Day in San Diego

Yes, when I came over here, I knew that in some parts of New England and around the Great Lakes St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated ever since the Irish immigrated in the masses in about one hundred years ago. But it seems the Americans need some Event all during the year that they can shop silly items for. Thus the pink madness of Valentine’s Day was immediately followed by Green-White-St. Patrick’s Day-Mania. Cookies in green and white, Lapricorn hats and then on the actual day GREEN beer!
My St. Patrick’s Day began at 6 a.m. volunteering at the February Duathlon of the San Diego Tri Club. Naturally all the prizes up for grabs were green & white! It was there that I was told the the celebrations kick off at 11 a.m. already with a parade in Hillcrest immediately followed by getting collectively drunk in the Gaslamp Quarter.
When by 8 p.m. I finally headed downtown to the meeting with Tina & Katrin I was far too late for the parade but just in time to see the first victims of the green beer and the long lines in front of the clubs/pubs. We then made the BIG mistake to talk quite a bit and went out to the pub at about 9:30 p.m.! We waited in front of one pub for 30min but then decided to buy some beer at Ralph’s and end the planned clubbing night in the lobby of their hotel.

The Bottom Line: If ever anyone reading this blog is in SD to spend St. Patrick’s Day then head off early for the parade and immediately after that run down to one of the pubs downtown!

American Courts at Work #2

Hmmmmmmmm

Only a few posts ago I praised the working conditions in American courts. Meanwhile even I have experienced the drawbacks of the system over here. Working for the PCC we are assigned to represent convicted criminal offenders in their appeals. As the court does not supply us with the original files we have to file a letter to request photocopies of the files that luckily are done at no costs for us. So one day we in writing request photocopies of 16 files. A few days later we receive the answer that the copies cannot be made yet as we have not yet put THE paper clips on the relevant pages. As we tell them that we’d like the whole files copied they still insist on someone coming down to the courthouse the put in the paper clips. So we have to literally drive downtown to get hold of the files, put one paper clip in each of them and ONLY then the copies are made. Now that makes me wonder …..

Der Berufungsanwalt – The Appeals Lawyer

In order to get a look at the work of a lawyer specializing in appeals I had the opportunity to work with Carl on three days of last week. Not for all the money in the world would I do this job! As Carl told me almost all of what he does is to read transcripts of trials in order to find mistakes made in the trial that would allow for an appeal. I get an idea of what that actually means when Carl entrusts me with the task of summarizing the testimonies of a divorce case. Does not sound too bad at first, yes! But the transcript has some 2.500 pages and I only have three days! At the end of day one all left in my brain are the words „Objection!“, „Sustained!“ and „Overruled“. By the end of day three I have only made it through to page 950 of 2.500. Sorry, Carl my sight got blurryl!

Local Customs

Ort: Henry’s Pub, Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego

Here are a few local customs I have come across during the last weeks. They are proof for the fact tha after all this is a different culture over here as similar as it might seem at first glance.

1.

NEVER EVER put you glass/bottle of beverage down in a bar or it will be collected by the waiter immediately!
Place: Henry’s Pub, Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego
Not for half a minute had I put down my still half full glass of Coke on a table beside me when the waiter grabbed it to take it away. He had already stacked it on a few other glasses when I remarked that I’d really still have wanted to drink the thing. He then had a very surprised look on his face and said that I couldn’t be serious, the ice had already melted and no one would want to drink that anymore, for sure. When I then told him that I had deliberately orderes the Coke WITHOUT ice the expression on his face got even more bewildered but he haeds off immediately to get me a new drink (naturally WITH ice but I did not argue any more!)

2.

In a conversation with a woman of Mexican eritage mention that is quite allright to be a couple and NOT get married.
That simply does not compute! Even if in that way of life is completely common all over Western Europe it is just about inconceivable for the above mentioned people. Quote: “You love her, so marry her!” For them, it seems as easy as that. IT is a senseless effort to try to explain why NOT to be marries is an alternative. It seems that just about no one over here has seen “four Weddings and a Funeral”.

3.

A Jeep Cherokee is a SMALL car!
I think I don’t have to elaborate any further on that one!

American Courts at work

Yes, one can with quite some justification criticize the shallow friendliness with which one is treated by the people over here. But at the very latest when even the lady in charge of the records at court who is obviously very, very busy greets you with a smile, you really appreciate this attitude! Apart from that, compared to German courts there is almost always someone there to help you! And I will not begin to talk about the IT technology compared to archive procedure based on procedures conceived in the late 1800s.

America at War

Up until my last bike ride which lead me into US Marine Camp Pendleton I had not encountered many signs of this country being at war. Yes there were a few more security announcements at the various airports but that was it!
I came to Camp Pendleton to ride part of the course of a triathlon I am going to participate in by the end of March. In order to enter the premises of the base you have to show to the heavily armed Marines some picture ID upon which they let you enter. Inside the camp there is a lot of military activity. Even it the camp is some 500qkm large, I constantly saw fighter jets in low altitude and tanks firing shells at targets kilometres away. That was quite intimidating. At first I smiled at the words „TANK XING“ written on the road. But when the first real one appeared, I did laugh no more!

S C H N E E / S N O W

I came over here in order to leave the German winter behind and had not seen any snow this winter in Frankfurt. Thus it even more surprised me to see snow over here. In California! One of my longer bike rides takes me out to Mt. Laguna and to an altitude of more than 6,000 ft. When I see the first small areas covered with snow I immediately take a picture.

My car is my Castle

Also: Dieses Buch sei jedem Leser dieser Zeilen wärmstens empfohlen!

Yes, even I have accepted that life without a car in SD is nearly impossible. Back in Frankfurt I could get by without a car for nearly all my life but over here: No Way! I live in SD and work in SD but still have to commute some 20km to work. There are no bike lanes to speak of and let’s not address the topic of public transportation. It virtually does not exist!

But let’s get to a few funny points of this car mania of the Americans.
First: The Drive-Thru- ATM. Given, you are not much likely to be a victim of a hit & run if you can safely drive away from the ATM without ever exiting your car. But then how much easier could it be to just grab the bills as they are disbursed?

Second: Drive-Thru-Starbucks
There is one Starbucks shop I nearly always stop by at the end of a bike ride. There are chairs outside and in the afternoon the sun warms the place very comfortably. So each time I enter the shop to buy my coffee I seem to be the only customer inside the shop. Outside in the Drive-Thru-Lane on the other hand are at least five cars lining up! They wait, I have checked, an average of nine minutes for their coffee where they could just hop out of the vehicle, walk in and get the coffee within one third of the time. Ridiculous!

Outlet-Malls

Just like every visitor to the USA I have to visit an outlet center on each of my visits. This time it took me to http://www.lasamericas.com/ a mere 100m away from the Mexican border.
To report on all 122 outlet shops of the mall would just be too much so I’ll limit my journal entry to a few notable facts: 1. Spanish is the dominant language here. IT seems, even if it is not really probable that quite a few Mexicans come here to shop. 2. Sometimes you have to wait hours at the checkout. The gentleman in front of my at the checkout of the Polo Ralph Lauren Shop buys about 150 items which take a long time to scan. When I ask the salesperson at the checkout the manager of which baseball team the customer in front of me was, he has a quite different explanation: many a manager of large stores in other major cities of the US fly over to this very outlet shop to buy items they resell at their own store back in, say, Denver, Colorado.

It never rains in southern California

What a promising song. To my demise it is not true at all times! Yes on average there are just about 30 days with any noticeable amount of rainfall in SD any given year but these almost all fall into the months I will be spending here.
It happened yesterday that a “storm”, as the Americans call it (Europeans would call it an average day of moderate rain), “hit” SD.
Much to my surprise this resulted in utter chaos on the streets! On dry roads I am always one of the slowest drivers around as I try to keep my gas bill low i.e. I abide to the speed limits. But on that rainy day I suddenly found myself overtaking car after car as locals took to the highway with less than 50 ml/h. At first I thought that they are just not used to driving in the rain. But then I saw the first two accidents that had occurred on roads very slippery from all the oil that had been washed away by the rain and I noticed that the roads here are just not built to cope with a considerable amount of rain. There is just not enough drainage for all the water and so there will be pools in the middle of a highway even if it does not rain really hard. I learned my lesson and now, just like everyone else drive a little slower in the rain.

FAST FOOD!

In ‘n out Burger
Carl’s Junior
Tacco Bell
Jack in the Box
McDonalds
Buger King
Krispy Kreme Donuts
KFC

tbc.

Tri Club Meeting mit / with Macca

Schon wieder Triathlon-Talk, sorry! ;-)

Triathlon-Talk again, sorry. ;-)
Prior to the Lambs gracious offer to put me up I had become a member of the Tri Club here in San Diego in order to search for accommodation during my stay here. Today the Club holds its January Club meeting I really wanted to attend because of two reasons. The first is to pick up my membership card, the second is to hear today’s speaker. When I pick up my membership card I once again am amazed at all the free stuff no one needs the Americans give away at every occasion. They call the stuff “swag”!
Today’s speaker it is one of the world’s best long distance Triathletes, Australian Chris McCormack. He is quite a smart guy and eloquent as well. He basically tells the story of his career which is quiet interesting and entertaining. At the end he and the host, Bob Babbit again address the drafting issue of last years race in Hawaii and well… to elaborate on that would just be too much. If you like, look it up in ww.slowtwitch.com.

Super(Bowl) Sunday / Super Sunday

We are here in the US on Super Sunday so we’ll watch the Super Bowl. A friend of Mark, another lawyer called Carl has invited us (Katrin, Tina and me) to watch the game with him and his wife Linda.
Their house is virtually hidden in one of San Diego’s many canyons and despite of being only a ten minute drive from downtown it is a surprisingly quiet neighbourhood. Once again I am stricken by the hospitality of Linda and Carl (“With a “C” not a “K”!”) and about everyone I meet here. Once again I am stuffed (no harm intended here) with (really good) food.
There is a few facts noteworthy about this day:

It seem many a viewer, Linda and Carl included, is more interested in the new commercials that premier during the Super Bowl that in the game itself. Especially when someone shouts out:”DOG-Commercial!” People stream to the TV from all over the house to watch the commercial in which there is no connection whatsoever betreen what funny thing th dog does and the promoted goods.

Ever since the 2004 “Nipple Gate” incident not a singe program on US-TV is broadcasted “live” anymore. The is a delay of a few seconds in which the censors can erase any offending acts that would otherwise be televised into the homes of hundreds of millions of the secred people.

American layers, even if they have already been working for decades can be just plainly terrified by the fact they have a jury trial coming up. Carl was our example on Super Sunday.

Endurance Sports Awards

Southern Californian endurance sports magazine „Competitor“ each February holds its own Endurance Sports awards at Sea World, San Diego. At the last minute I acquired a ticket and went there at 6 p.m. The thing started off with an outside “dinner” Germans would call buffet before the awards ceremony was held indoors.
Bob Babbit hosted the event again just like the Club Meeting last Thursday. The wholt thing was quite interesting if not for two rather questionable Awards. The award for Cyclist fo the Year 2006 went to Floyd Landis who tested positive for testosterone on one of the stages of last years Tour de France. The juries choice was greeted by a lot applause but, me included about one fourth of the audience just sat there shaking their heads. The Humanitarian Award went to Lt. Andrew Baldwin, the next “Bachelor” on ABCs show of the same name. Never before in my life had I seen such a smooth character. Really, the guy was not my type! To learn more about him, click here:

Das Arbitration Meeting – The Arbitration meeting

I already told you about the arbitration meeting I prepared for Mark. So today was the hearing. First of all, the clients show up at the office to be briefed by Mark as to what to say in the hearing. They are to tell the story in their own words and through the preparation are to made conscious of what to tell and what to leave out. A little later we meet at the office of the arbitrator. at the meeting, all law professionals introduce themselves by their first names. A thing I still have to get used to.
To make a long story short: We lost big time! Outch! Like beaten dogs we leave; but that is life. The big problem is to have to tell the clients that the “evil” opponents just prevailed. Luckily Mark manages to do that quite professionally.

Die ersten Arbeitstage - The first days at work

Technically my internship starts on Feb. 2nd but yesterday when we asked Mark for assistance he asked me to come over on Jan. 30th already. So, what the boss says is law so I show up on Wednesday already. The office is basically run by Mark and two law students of Thomas Jefferson Law School, Josh and Stephanie. It’s a small place for the five of us to work in but then we’ll have to cope. The office is situated in the University Heights district of San Diego just north of Hillcrest. The atmosphere at work differs a lot from what I experienced working with a large German Law Firm during the last months. No electronic files, no hundreds of emails a day, virtually just a telephone, a fax machine and a small collection of textbooks and forms and that’s it. Much more, Mark says, you don’t need as a sole practitioner.
The first day brings my first challenge: Mark asks me to prepare the briefing for an arbitration meeting next week. Well, the file has more than 200 pages; I’ve never seen an American style file before. I guess it’s kind of a test. Much to my surprise Mark accepts much of what I prepare over the weekend.

Das Unterkunftsdebakel - The Accomodation Disaster

Man nenne mich ab hier Chauffeur.

On Sunday evening my two colleagues Katrin and Tina, also staying here until May arrive, at the airport from where I take them to theirs previously booked apartment in the Vantaggio Suites. The place obviously mainly used by Asian students in their very early twenties is overbooked for the night so they have to stay the first night a different but better apartment complex. Well, the day after that I pick them up again and we head over to the Vantaggio Suites again only to be told that their apartment will not be cleaned until 4 p.m. So we leave their luggage there and I take them on a short tour of town roughly similar to what Chris showed me the other day. Upon our third arrival at the Vantaggio Suites around 4 p.m. they can move in to their first floor “apartment”. For the two of them the thing is tiny, roughly 180 square ft. In addition to that the only window opens directly to a well frequented sidewalk prohibiting any opening if not for the danger of a night time burglary. Well, we think this’ll have to do; at least it’s cheap, what more can one expect and I leave for Spring Valley.
Then, I’ve already headed to bed I receive a call from Katrin who, close to tears explains that when Tina wanted to take the first shower in the bath tub, the bath tub overflowed and flooded the whole apartment before they even noticed. The managers of the complex don’t seem worried, and evidently say that this will be fixed in no time. Nonetheless the girls want to get nothing but out of the cold and damp place and ask me to pick them up in the morning to search for another accommodation.
When I arrive the next morning both sit outside the complex. The managers put giant fans into the room in order to dry the wet carpet. Well, as stated previously you can’t open the window, so this is just a senseless effort. We immediately head off searching for another apartment and find a really decent one in the Island Inn. IT even is not that much more expensive. The only problem remaining is who to get the money back, they have already paid? We decide to visit Mark, the lawyer I’ll work for and ask him for assistance. He offers help without hesitation but luckily it in the end is not needed as the manager of the Vantaggio-Suites is cooperative and pays just about all the money back.

Lyons Valley - oder - überraschende Höhenmeter / Lyons Valley – or – surprise climbs

On day 5 I prepre my tour east more throughly but still encounter unexpected difficulties. A search on Google Earth turned up a quite promising route through the Lyons Valley which I find without much of a problem. The surprise is that the terrain I encounter is quite hille and the tour takes 3h30min instead of the planned 2h30min. Nonetheless it’s beautiful backcountry there.

Clubrace # 1 & Stadtrundfahrt mit Chris – Clubrace # 1 & City Tour with Chris

The January Club race of the San Diego Triathlon Club iss et for today and I signed up for it when I was still back in Germany. Due to the jet lag still plaguing me I have no difficulty in getting up early enough to be on Fiesta Island for the early race start at 7 a.m. Things are a little complicated when I forget my helmet and have to return home once more but in the end I make it in time.
The Club Races are members only and it is about 50 participants. Luckily they had to cancel the swim because the club did not get a permit from the city for taking to the water. The atmosphere at the race is just charming! The transitions are situated right in front of your parked car and race numbers are just written on the back of your hand. You have to shout them out to the volunteers keeping the time.
The race today is a Duathlon (2R – 17B – 4R - distance in miles). Even though due to an injury I did not run for the last three months the first run split all right and I mount my bike in about 10th place. The bike course is 4 loops of Fiesta Island (www.fiestaisland.com) which is completely flat. At the end of the
bike split I find myself in second place and am able to hold off the third place finisher who makes up over two minutes on the 4 miles by a mere five seconds. This guy is from Switzerland as it turns out later when his wife approaches me asking me whether I was German. She had read my teams name on my jersey.
What surprises me most is that the wonderful volunteers of the Tri Club provide a huge breakfast for everyone at the finish line. Over with us in order to have people prepare all these things, you’d have to announce the event months beforehand and people would perhaps bring a small apple pie. Over here where they have such a race every month they bring food by the tons, just amazing! And yes, I thankfully eat a few muffins and Croissants but it will take a while until I’ll be able to eat fried bacon immediately after such a competition. The Americans, it seems, enjoy the stuff very much!

When I return to SV Chris already awaits me to take me on her short tour of the city. She takes me across Coronado Bridge over to the peninsula of the same name and we have lunch at a very niche café with a panoramic view of downtown San Diego. The view of downtown you have from the top of Coronado bridge is just breathtaking. After a short tour of Coronado and a quick look at the famous Hotel Del Coronado we head over to beautiful Balboa Park with all its museums and theatres.

Die El Cahon-Exkursion – The Maze of El Cahon

As Spring Valley is one of the most eastern suburbs of SD, a look at the map lets it seem quite easy to escape the dense traffic. Nonetheless my first try at this ends in disaster! Even if I afterwards realise that I took just wrong turn, I am lost in the maze that is east San Diego and El Chaon for more than ninety minutes. Only then do I meet another cyclist who directs me toward Old Highway 80 an a little less traffic. The tour of altogether 2h30min is not much fun and I really begin to doubt if ever I’ll find a nice bike ride here.
In the Afternoon I head out by myself for a “short” tour of San Diego in my car and am really surprised by the sheer vastness of the city limits. I end up having coffee in Ocean Beach a surfer neighbourhood a little run down but perhaps because of this very appealing.

Die Tri-Coast / The Tri-Coast

After shopping at Albertsons I use the beautiful day to drive up the coat to Encinitas and Carlsbad. Well, there is a reason for that: along this coastal strip of 10 miles are situated the two most prominent triathlon stores of San Diego County, Nytro and B&L Bikes and Sports. As was to be expected, I’ve forgotten a few important things and I can get my optical swimming goggles at B&L as well as a few tips concerning bike routes.
Next I take my bike out of the car for my first ride. It’s just up north on Highway 101 where they also have club rides of the Triathlon Club of San Diego that I have become a member prior to coming over here. This route seems nice for showing off but for a real training ride there are way too many traffic lights and cars. So for my long rides I’ll have to look elsewhere than the coastal San Diego County.

Shopping

I wake up at 5:30 a.m., quite acceptable if you consider that my body thinks it’s 2:30 p.m. Still a little dizzy I reassemble my bicycle. Before I can take thke my steed out for a ride however Bob and I take off to pick up my rental car at http://www.dirtcheaprentacar.com/. Well, the car is what I expected: a tiny, old and really battered Hundai Accent with just unter 200,000 miles. When Bob sees the car for the first time he cannot suppress shouting out loud; „Oh god, Tim, you are selling your soul!“. Before I drive off, the car gets its name: “RL” which is short for “rusty shed” in German. The trunk of the car is so tiny that I’ll have to transport the bike on the rear seats but luckily I brought a lock to fix it to the front steats.

My internship starts on Feb. 2nd so I can use this first day to go shopping for essentials. Albertsons is right arounds the corner from 3467 Glen Drv., Spring Valley, where the Lambs live, roughly 12 miles east of downtown San Diego. After ten years this my first time in a REAL American supermarket again and it’s all the same: the smell of plastic and chlorine, only disgusting American beer and much more unhealthy food than in the German equivalents.

Amerikanische Hilfsbereitschaft – American Helpfulness

I get a first taste of this character trait that at least on the surface I think is more present in the US than in Germany even before I reach my final destination of San Diego, CA. I lost my brand new digital camera somewhere on the way from Frankfurt to O’Hare Airport, Chicago and intend to buy a new one upon arrival. Well three months without photo documentation, no way! The man in the seat next to me on the plane from Chicago to San Diego immediately offers help! Fry’s, he says is the best and cheapest place to get electronic devices and he even mentions that they have ads on the last page of the Friday newspaper!

And at the airport I am greeted by Christine and Bob who will put me up for my three months here in San Diego. “Certainly” Chris told me on the phone a few months ago they will accommodate me a no costs. I am still taken aback by this and do not know how ever to givt that back to them.

Day one ends at 12 p.m. local time. That’s was 29 hours without sleep. Wow! But in order to overcome the jet lag that was inevitable!

24. 1. 2007 Ankunft in SD - Arrival

Upon arrival Christine and Bob, the family I will be staying with for the three months pick me up at the airport. We head east to their house which is situated in Spring Valley, some 15km from downtown San Diego (SD).
