Der Berufungsanwalt – The Appeals Lawyer

Für drei Tage der letzten Arbeitswoche war ich, um einmal in dessen Arbeitsweise hineinzuschnuppern, an einen befreundeten Anwalt ausgeliehen, der ausschließlich Rechtsmittelverfahren betreibt. Für kein Geld dieser Welt würde ich diesen Job machen wollen. Wie mit Carl versichert besteht ein Großteil seiner Tätigkeit daraus, die Wortprotokolle des Ausgangsprozesses nach eventuellen Fehlern zu durchsuchen. Einen kleinen Vorgeschmack, wie diese Arbeit ist bekomme ich selbst, als mir Carl das Protokoll eines Scheidungsverfahrens übergibt. Es umfasst in toto 2.500 Seiten und ich soll in drei Tagen bitte die Zeugenaussagen zusammenfassen und nach Fehlern suchen. Am Ende des ersten Tages besteht mein Hrin ausschließlich aus den Worten „Objection!“, „Sustained!“ und „Overruled“. Am Ende des driten Tages bin ich auf nur bis Seite 950 gekommen. Sorry, Carl.
Lustig ist, dass sich mir der Sinn solche Wortprotokolle kaum erschließt, Carl wiederum nicht weiss, wie man denn überhaupt ohne solche Protokolle auskommen sollte.

In order to get a look at the work of a lawyer specializing in appeals I had the opportunity to work with Carl on three days of last week. Not for all the money in the world would I do this job! As Carl told me almost all of what he does is to read transcripts of trials in order to find mistakes made in the trial that would allow for an appeal. I get an idea of what that actually means when Carl entrusts me with the task of summarizing the testimonies of a divorce case. Does not sound too bad at first, yes! But the transcript has some 2.500 pages and I only have three days! At the end of day one all left in my brain are the words „Objection!“, „Sustained!“ and „Overruled“. By the end of day three I have only made it through to page 950 of 2.500. Sorry, Carl my sight got blurryl!
