Local Customs

Hier eine kleine Liste von „Do’s & Dont’s“, die mir in der letzten Zeit doch bewusst haben werden lassen, dass ich mich hier in einem anderen Kulturkreis befinde:

1.
Stelle in einer Bar NIEMALS Dein Glas ab, behalte es IMMER in der Hand, sonst ist es weg, egal wie voll es war.
Ort: Henry’s Pub, Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego
Ich hatte meine ohne Eis bestellte Cola nicht einmal halbleer getrunken für eine Minute auf dem Tisch neben mir abgestellt, schon sammelte der Kellner das Glas ein. Auf meine Bemerkung hin, das habe ich eigentlich noch trinken wollen, ernte ich einen erstaunten Blick und den Kommentar, dass das da, das Eis sei doch schon geschmolzen doch niemand mehr trinken können wolle. Als ich ihm dann erkläre, ich hätte die Cola absichtlich ohne Eis bestellt, verliert er jeglichen Gesichtsausdruck und bringt mir sofort eine neue Cola (natürlich mit Ein!).

Ein Jeep Cherokee ist ein KLEINES Auto!
Mehr muss man dazu wohl aus europäischer Sicht nicht sagen, oder?

3.
Wenn man einen Telefonanruf tätigt, NIE sofort den eigenen Namen sagen, sondern nach dem Gesprächspartner fragen!
Sollte man nach dem in Deutschland wie in Deutschland üblich verfahren, wird man schnell als unverschämt abgestempelt.



Here are a few local customs I have come across during the last weeks. They are proof for the fact tha after all this is a different culture over here as similar as it might seem at first glance.

1.
NEVER EVER put you glass/bottle of beverage down in a bar or it will be collected by the waiter immediately!

Not for half a minute had I put down my still half full glass of Coke on a table beside me when the waiter grabbed it to take it away. He had already stacked it on a few other glasses when I remarked that I’d really still have wanted to drink the thing. He then had a very surprised look on his face and said that I couldn’t be serious, the ice had already melted and no one would want to drink that anymore, for sure. When I then told him that I had deliberately orderes the Coke WITHOUT ice the expression on his face got even more bewildered but he haeds off immediately to get me a new drink (naturally WITH ice but I did not argue any more!)

2.
In a conversation with a woman of Mexican eritage mention that is quite allright to be a couple and NOT get married.
That simply does not compute! Even if in that way of life is completely common all over Western Europe it is just about inconceivable for the above mentioned people. Quote: “You love her, so marry her!” For them, it seems as easy as that. IT is a senseless effort to try to explain why NOT to be marries is an alternative. It seems that just about no one over here has seen “four Weddings and a Funeral”.


3.
A Jeep Cherokee is a SMALL car!
I think I don’t have to elaborate any further on that one!
