Amerikanische Hilfsbereitschaft – American Helpfulness

Die erste Kostprobe dieser, jedenfalls zumeist und öfter als in Deutschland zu findenden Eigenschaft der Einwohner dieses Landes bekomme ich schon, bevor ich mein eigentliches Ziel San Diego erreiche. Da ich beim Zwischenstopp in Chicago bemerkte, dass ich meine neue Digitalkamera entweder am Gate in Frankfurt oder im Flugzeug liegengelassen habe, und das meinem Sitznachbarn auf den Flug Chicago – San Diego erzähle, bekomme ich von ihm detaillierte Einkaufstipps für alle Elektronikgeräte. Er zählt vier verschiedene Großmärkte auf, empfiehlt aber „Fry’s“ als den größten und günstigsten.

Und dann als ich aus dem Flughafen komme, empfangen mich Christine & Bob, die mich für meine Zeit hier bei sich wohnen lassen! „Selbstverständlich“ hatte Chris am Telefon gesagt, verlangt sie dafür nichts. Davon bin ich immer noch völlig schockiert und weiß nicht, wie ich das auch nur annähernd zurückgeben soll.

Der erste Tag geht um 24h Ortszeit SD zu Ende. Das sind 29 Stunden, die ich am Stück wach geblieben bin. Anstrengend, aber zur Vermeidung des totalen Kollapses wegen Jetlags fast unumgänglich.


I get a first taste of this character trait that at least on the surface I think is more present in the US than in Germany even before I reach my final destination of San Diego, CA. I lost my brand new digital camera somewhere on the way from Frankfurt to O’Hare Airport, Chicago and intend to buy a new one upon arrival. Well three months without photo documentation, no way! The man in the seat next to me on the plane from Chicago to San Diego immediately offers help! Fry’s, he says is the best and cheapest place to get electronic devices and he even mentions that they have ads on the last page of the Friday newspaper!

And at the airport I am greeted by Christine and Bob who will put me up for my three months here in San Diego. “Certainly” Chris told me on the phone a few months ago they will accommodate me a no costs. I am still taken aback by this and do not know how ever to givt that back to them.

Day one ends at 12 p.m. local time. That’s was 29 hours without sleep. Wow! But in order to overcome the jet lag that was inevitable!
