It never rains in southern California

Schönes Lied, leider nicht ganz wahr. Es mag zwar sein, dass es in SD nur 30 Regentage pro Jahr gibt, jedoch fallen die fast zur Gänze in die Monate Januar bis Mai, also wird es hier auch ein paar geben. Am 9. 2. ist so ein tag, der einen vom Pazifik kommenden Dauerregen bringt und, was mich etwas überrascht ein völliges Verkehrschaos auslöst. War ich mit RL bei trockener Straße einer der langsamsten Fahrer auf dem Highway, so bin ich mit gleich bleibender Geschwindigkeit im Regen auf einmal permanent dabei, zu überholen. mir wird aber auch schnell klar, dass die Straßen hier einfach nicht für solche Verhältnisse gebaut sind: es gibt kaum Abflussmöglichkeiten für das Wasser und der Fahrbahnbelag ist sehr glatt, was selbst bei moderatem Regen zu sehr schlechter Sicht führt, da von den Fahrzeugen viel mehr Gischt aufgewirbelt wird als auf der deutschen Autobahn. Als dann drei Autos miteinander Kegeln spielen trete auch ich mal lieber aufs Bremspedal.

What a promising song. To my demise it is not true at all times! Yes on average there are just about 30 days with any noticeable amount of rainfall in SD any given year but these almost all fall into the months I will be spending here.
It happened yesterday that a “storm”, as the Americans call it (Europeans would call it an average day of moderate rain), “hit” SD.
Much to my surprise this resulted in utter chaos on the streets! On dry roads I am always one of the slowest drivers around as I try to keep my gas bill low i.e. I abide to the speed limits. But on that rainy day I suddenly found myself overtaking car after car as locals took to the highway with less than 50 ml/h. At first I thought that they are just not used to driving in the rain. But then I saw the first two accidents that had occurred on roads very slippery from all the oil that had been washed away by the rain and I noticed that the roads here are just not built to cope with a considerable amount of rain. There is just not enough drainage for all the water and so there will be pools in the middle of a highway even if it does not rain really hard. I learned my lesson and now, just like everyone else drive a little slower in the rain.
